Madonna is 24 years old and is from Lilongwe, the capital of Malawi. She lives with her mother, brothers and nephew. She runs a small business selling oil and sugar to meet her needs. She explains with borders closing, sourcing things for her business has become expensive. Before the pandemic, she spent her time going to the market to buy things for her business, chatting with friends and fulfilling her duties as a Jehovah Witness.

“After Corona virus spread rapidly a couple months ago, schools were closed. After being closed, 5 if not 4 months passed without learners going to school including girls. This disrupted their education in their life. Most girls got married, some fell pregnant with no man or a boy who impregnated them taking responsibility and they’re home with it. So I think for girls in my community, what can help them through the pandemic is by going around in schools to encourage such girls, and also giving them personal protective equipment because they were told that everyone going to school must put on mask.”
