Madonna is 24 years old and is from Lilongwe, the capital of Malawi. She lives with her mother, brothers and nephew. She runs a small business selling oil and sugar to meet her needs. She explains with borders closing, sourcing things for her business has become expensive. Before the pandemic, she spent her time going to the market to buy things for her business, chatting with friends and fulfilling her duties as a Jehovah Witness.

“A lot affected me, but what what affected me the most were the lock-downs that had been happening, in addition to closing of borders. Things have been very expensive, and as I speak, prices keep on rising. So, if you order things to sell, people complain and do not buy, it can even take a month without selling, you see?…We have just accepted that there is nothing we can do but rather just thrive to find the essentials in our lives like soap and food, yes things like that for us to at least look well. That’s what we think is very important.”
