Girl Effect’s Malawian youth brand, Zathu, has been awarded a gold honour in the Gender Equality category at the Shorty Social Good Awards, in recognition of the impact it has made towards achieving gender equality in Malawi.

The Shorty Social Good Awards honour the social good initiatives brands, agencies and nonprofits are taking to make our world a better place. While the Shorty Awards have long-honoured the best of social media, this competition includes efforts made by organisations to improve diversity, foster globally-minded business partnerships and increase employee community and civic engagement.

In 2016, Girl Effect saw an opportunity to use the power of mass media to tackle the structural and social drivers that reinforce gender inequality in Malawi and in partnership with the PEPFAR DREAMS initiative, created Zathu, a youth brand on a mission to unite girls and boys.

Through music and storytelling, Zathu engages, educates and inspires young people, propelling a rising generation to forge a more equal Malawi.

Zathu was chosen by members of the Real Time Academy of Short Form Arts & Sciences, comprised of luminaries from advertising, media, entertainment and technology.
