Jik’iZiNTO — Zulu for “things are changing for the better” — is a movement designed to inspire and equip a generation of young South Africans.
Through compelling storytelling across our TV drama, radio talk shows, digital and social media, and community gatherings, we meet young people where they are with vital resources and support. By addressing the real challenges South African youth face daily, from healthcare access to building sustainable livelihoods, Jik’iZiNTO equips the next generation to make confident choices, pursue their ambitions, and create lasting positive change in their communities.
Big Sis is an award-winning health platform for girls in South Africa. Through engaging and relatable content, we dive into topics that often feel off-limits, like navigating body changes or dealing with loneliness. We’re the go-to place for tough questions like “Am I ready for sex?” or “Why do I feel so lonely?”— and we tackle them with care and understanding.
Co-created with girls, their partners, and health experts, our 24/7 AI-powered WhatsApp service makes it easy for young people to get personalized advice. When ready, we connect them to our human-staffed chat center with trained health agents. They provide judgment-free consultation, screening, and booking for vetted youth-friendly health services including STI testing, therapy, and more.
Big Sis simplifies fragmented health systems, providing clear, accessible pathways to services.
Young people are at the heart of all we do
Together, we design, create, and evaluate initiatives that amplify youth voices, challenge gender norms, and create impact across health, education, and economic livelihoods. Our meaningful youth engagement happens through three key approaches: Youth Advisory Panels, Youth Creator Networks, and Young Professionals.

“My involvement has shown me that when young people are part of the conversation, the impact is greater and more genuine."

Through my role on the Youth Advisory Panel, I’ve contributed to Girl Effect’s programs by sharing insights from my community and co-developing solutions that are relevant to us, as the youth. One highlight was helping create educational materials on reproductive health that were culturally sensitive yet informative. This effort leads to increased local engagement and more open discussions among youth. My involvement has shown me that when young people are part of the conversation, the impact is greater and more genuine. I’m proud to be part of this change, as it builds a future where young voices lead.
Being part of Girl Effect has been invaluable for my studies in community development and leadership. I’ve learned to engage communities effectively, listen deeply to people’s needs, and co-create solutions that make a difference. Working on every assignment and being part of trainings has given me practical skills in communication, enhancing my interests for research and advocacy. These experiences have shown me the power of youth-led change and prepared me to pursue a career where I can lead and inspire others. Girl Effect has strengthened my passion for creating resilient, empowered communities.
Girl Effect has helped me grow as a leader by teaching me how to co-create solutions with others. This experience has given me confidence that my voice and the voices of young people everywhere truly matter.
“With support from the Girl Effect team, I wrote and submitted an abstract to the Reproductive Health Network Kenya (RHNK) on increasing awareness and access to SRHR information... I believe I was able to inspire a lot of the young people.”

Through my work with Girl Effect, I’ve had the opportunity to contribute significantly to Jik’iZiNTO. I’ve provided feedback on various aspects of Jik’iZiNTO media, including music, themes, fonts, and the overall tone, to ensure it resonates with young people in South Africa. Additionally, I’ve had the privilege of connecting with young professionals from diverse educational backgrounds and areas of expertise. Together, we’ve discussed critical issues affecting our youth, fostering a collective effort to create positive change. My involvement has also allowed me to meet Girl Effect founders, attend Jik’iZiNTO watch parties, and play a meaningful role in this impactful initiative.
My experience with Girl Effect has been invaluable for my career development. Through networking within the organization, I was introduced to the CEO of Citizen Code, who kindly offered to mentor me—a huge step forward for my professional growth, thanks to Denese and her introduction. Girl Effect has also boosted my confidence, encouraging me to speak up more assertively about my career goals and ambitions. The skills and connections I’ve gained here will undoubtedly shape my future path in meaningful ways.
My experience with Girl Effect has been incredibly enlightening. It’s fulfilling to be a part of the Youth Advisory Panel, and I deeply value the lessons I’ve learned here.
One of my most memorable experiences was meeting the Girl Effect team in person. After months of virtual collaboration, it was inspiring to connect face-to-face with everyone and celebrate the unique achievements and journeys that led us all here. I also loved the Dichipi watch party, where I could see my creative input on themes, colors, and ideas for Jik’iZiNTO come to life on screen.
